Marqués de Murrieta, located in Spain’s Rioja Alta, has been owned by the Counts of Creixell since 1852. The 300 hectares of vines is currently run by Count Vicente Cebrián-Sagarigga and his sister, Cristina.
The hot, continental climate is tempered by growing grapes at elevation, retaining freshness and acidity in the final wines. Murrieta only use estate-grown grapes for their wines, ensuring the very best quality fruit from the vineyard. The main variety produced is the classic Tempranillo grape with lesser amounts of Garnacha, Viura, Mazuelo, Graciano and Cabernet Sauvignon also grown.
María Vargas has been Head Winemaker since 2000. She is a brilliant blender, skilled at combining the different plots of grapes to produce beautifully balanced wines of real character.
The estate specialises in long, oak-aged wines and predominantly uses American barrels, but some French oak is also used.
