What Makes A Fine Wine?

The words ‘fine wine’ tend to conjure up images of priceless bottles of wine, gently gathering dust as they age in a cellar. But just what makes a wine a ‘fine wine’? And can a wine be fine if doesn’t boast a high price tag or if it comes from, say, a New World wine region? Read on for our easy guide to fine wines, complete with some fantastic options that are on special offer in our Fine Wine Sale.

What is a fine wine, exactly?

If you’re not entirely sure what constitutes a fine wine, you’re not alone as there is no firm definition of ‘fine wine’. In general, fine wines can be described as high-quality wines typically made by some of the world's best winemakers. They are crafted with care and expertise, with the grapes coming from the very best vineyards, and the quality of the wine will shine through.

Where do fine wines come from?

Traditionally, fine wines come from classic wine regions such as Bordeaux and Burgundy but increasingly, New World fine wines from the likes of Australia, New Zealand and the USA are in the conversation.

What is special about them?

From the famous, sought-after names to the award winners or exceptionally rare bottles, you can always expect a fine wine to be of excellent quality. It will have good balance, length and complexity of aromas and flavours.

A fine wine will usually age very well too, with the flavours becoming more harmonious over time and they may also increase in value, all of which makes them popular among wine enthusiasts. Fine wines also tend to pair well with food and really can elevate a dining experience to something special.

Are fine wines always old and expensive?

No, not always. While that may be what first comes to mind, the world of fine wines comprises everything from the classics to cult wines from smaller wineries. They may come from top estates or famous brands, and some are made in tiny quantities, adding to the exclusivity.

When it comes to premium wines, vintages are particularly important as weather fluctuations year to year can impact the style and quality of a wine. Some vintages may be in high demand and boast a higher price tag as a result. A browse through our fine wine sale will show a wide range of wine style, regions and prices to suit all budgets and tastes. There are some great deals to be had!
